Shirakawa-go is a World Heritage site in the Japanese Alps. The houses are all constructed with thatched roofs in a style that dates back several centuries. The homes are still occupied, but several are open to visitors (for a fee, of course). The villagers take turns making 'fire watch' rounds each evening since flames, as you might imagine, are quite a threat here.
